Hull City must avoid a repeat of last summer’s frustrating window under Tim Walter if they’re to be fully ready for the start of the new Championship campaign.

City will find out who they will kick off the 2025/26 season against a week on Thursday and unlike last season, they must get themselves in better shape.

While it would be unfair to expect the club to have completed all of their business by the time the first game is here, the bulk of their work simply has to be well on the way. They cannot afford to write off the first month and leave themselves chasing their tail as we saw last August.

While Walter was a disastrous appointment, he was operating with his hands tied behind his back to a certain extent. Throughout pre-season, the German raised concerns about the size and quality of his squad.

At first, he seemed relaxed. During the club’s pre-season trip to Turkey, Walter was calm about the way things were and expected business to get done. That fairly relaxed exterior early on in the club’s preparations for the new season soon turned to obvious frustration.

His reluctance to talk about transfers, often shutting down questions, clearly hid an inner frustration. By the time City played their final game of pre-season against Ruben Selles’ Reading, his exasperation became all too obvious with a post-match interview laden with expletives, and it wasn’t just because he’d been sent all the way to the SCL Stadium.

As we’ve reported before, his club interview never saw the light of day for those reasons. And while he was given players by the end of the window, it was too late and he found it difficult to claw back a situation that left City mired in struggle.

It wasn’t even that Acun Ilicali didn’t back Walter. More than £20m was spent. Abu Kamara, Liam Millar, Mason Burstow, Kasey Palmer, Mohamed Belloumi and Charlie Hughes all came in for fees totalling more than £20m, while the likes of Steven Alzate and Joao Pedro were added on sizeable wages and there was fair expenditure on loan signings Carl Rushworth, Gustavo Puerta and Oscar Zambrano.

There were some fine signings, even if the lack of quality up front was all too apparent. But it happened too late. Fourteen of their 17 signings came after that defeat in Royal Berkshire. There was no time to bed them in, and make sure they were fully fit.

Pre-season is the most important part of any club’s campaign. The work done is vital. Trips abroad often set the tone for what’s to come in the following nine months. Grant McCann heralded the training camp in Scotland as absolutely crucial in shaking off the feeling of relegation and preparing to win the League One title.

Not only is pre-season hugely significant for team bonding and getting to grips with the new manager’s demands, it’s also pivotal for fitness and potentially preventing injury. City’s injury record was wretched, and perhaps, no coincidence given the way things played out.

For new head coach Sergej Jakirovic, what happens in the next few weeks will be huge and go a long way to determining whether or not he will be a success at the MKM Stadium.

Ilicali will back him, of course, he will, but it needs to be quick. There will be signings that come later in the window, we know that, but there are players that can be signed before that. Oliver McBurnie needs to be wrapped up before the players return for the start of pre-season training. He simply has to be on the flight out to Istanbul on July 13. One has arrived so far in Reda Laalaoui, and that’s a good start, but he’s unproven at a high level and while clearly a talent, will need time to adjust to the rigours of English football. Semi Ajayi would be another positive arrival.

Others must follow.

City have to be ready to kick off the new campaign, on whatever day it ends up being ready and raring to go. Ilicali, Jared Dublin, Martin Hodge and their team of staff must arm Jakirovic with the players capable of adding to what’s already in the dressing room to give him a chance.

Walter, as much as he was a disaster, was never given a realistic chance. That cannot be repeated under Jakirovic. Give him the tools and give him a chance of succeeding.
