Two women motorists were left terrified after a drunken stranger forcefully tried to get into their cars and threatened to kill one of them as they drove along a Hull street.
Aggressive troublemaker Darren Tanner had a concrete slab with him when he menacingly told one woman: “I’m going to kill you all.” He had earlier gone to a stranger’s home armed with a knife, a court heard.
Tanner, 24, formerly of Sefton Street, west Hull, but recently in custody on remand, admitted possessing a knife, causing criminal damage and affray on May 7.
Amber Hobson, prosecuting, told Grimsby Crown Court that the women had been travelling in separate cars in the evening when they were randomly approached and threatened by Tanner, who was riding a bicycle. He had a concrete slab and he tried to open the driver’s door. He shouted at one woman: “I’m going to kill you all.”
He slammed his hands on the bonnet of another woman’s car.
He had drunk excessive amounts of alcohol and had used a brick to smash a patio window at a property in Sefton Street, Hull. When the occupier approached him, Tanner pulled out a knife and there was a tussle. He fled and was later seen riding his cycle on Glasgow Street, where he held up traffic and made threats.
Ben Hammersley, mitigating, said that there had been no injury caused to anyone. Tanner claimed that he had no recollection of events and he was unable to offer any explanation for the random attacks. “Alcohol is a significant issue for this young man,” said Mr Hammersley.
Recorder Nathan Moxon said that it was Tanner’s second offence for possessing a weapon. “I can only imagine the fear those ladies felt when you attempted to enter their cars,” he said. The offences were committed just a few weeks into a suspended prison sentence for similar offences.
Tanner was jailed for 23 months. The sentence included a consecutive three months for breaching the suspended sentence.
As reported in May 2023, Tanner was jailed for 16 months at Hull Crown Court after he admitted an offence of affray on December 26, 2021.
