An expert shared a number of UK coins that are highly sought-after by collectors

People are being encouraged to check their old penny coins, as some could be worth more than £206,000 collectively. A numismatic specialist has highlighted several UK coins that are highly prized amongst collectors.

In a video shared on social media platform TikTok, an expert known as the Coin Collecting Wizard explained what people should be searching for. According to his assessment, the rarest coin on his list could fetch an astonishing £200,000.

He said: “You, yes, you stop what you are doing and listen. Did you know there are old pennies worth thousands of pounds?”

He subsequently identified the following coins and their estimated auction values. All these coins display their date and the inscription “one penny” on the reverse (tail side).

They also feature an image of Britannia holding a trident on this side. The coins to look for are:

  • 1918 penny with a KN mint mark – between £30 and £600
  • 1950 penny – between £30 and £70
  • 1875 H penny – between £100 and £3,000
  • 1919 KN penny – up to £2,000
  • 1951 penny – between £50 and £100
  • 1912 penny with a H mint mark – around £5
  • 1902 penny with a low tide – £500
  • 1894 penny – around £160
  • 1918 H penny in great condition – over £150
  • 1882 H penny – over £200

The Coin Collecting Wizard also highlighted one of Britain’s scarcest coins, the 1933 penny. This particular piece is valued at “over £2,000”, he said.

The coin commands significant attention amongst collectors because the Royal Mint produced only an estimated six or seven examples. The obverse features King George V’s portrait, whilst the reverse depicts Britannia holding a trident.

According to Antiques Trade Gazette, one specimen achieved an remarkable £127,000 at auction in 2016. The Royal Mint Museum website states: “No record was kept at the time of how many pennies dated 1933 were made but it is thought to be no more than six or seven.

“With no precise record of the number made, and with the coin having been struck to ordinary circulation standard, it seemed possible that one might turn up in everyday use, prompting a generation to search their change for the rare but ultimately elusive penny of 1933.”
