There have been numerous claims of widespread disturbances at HMP Millsike

East Yorkshire’s new prison HMP Millsike has denied claims spreading on social media that there has been rioting and widespread disturbance. The category C prison – which can house around 1,500 inmates – at Full Sutton opened in March.

However, numerous claims have emerged on social media alleging that a number of disturbances have taken place at the facility this week, with some suggesting rioting has occurred. One post alleges that house block B in the East Yorkshire prison was taken over by inmates.

It was also claimed that house block F was ‘smashed to pieces’. Additional claims suggest staff shortages and prisoners being locked up all day.

The prison is operated privately by Mitie, who have now released a statement dismissing the social media claims. They did, however, confirm that some “minor incidents” have taken place but insisted the prison is functioning normally.

In the statement, a Mitie spokesperson said: “The reports regarding prisoner control and staff fleeing are inaccurate. There were a couple of minor incidents yesterday, which were quickly resolved. The prison continues to operate as normal.”
