Hull KR and Brisbane Broncos have turned down a mega-money offer to take the World Club Challenge to Qatar, with the Robins set to host the game in February

Hull KR and Brisbane Broncos have rejected a substantial offer to relocate the World Club Challenge to Qatar.

The proposal, which involved a seven-figure sum from Qatar to host the match between the Super League and NRL champions, was seriously considered due to its financial allure and Qatar’s keenness to secure the event.

However, both clubs have opted to keep the game in the UK next year, with Hull KR set to host the match. The decision was influenced by the anticipation of a full house, following Wigan’s successful 2024 match where they triumphed over Penrith Panthers.

While Hull KR is eager to keep the game in Hull, alternative venues such as Leeds United’s Elland Road were explored. However, it’s expected that the MKM Stadium, home of local rivals Hull FC, will be chosen, with CEO Paul Lakin revealing that the venue was under consideration following their Grand Final victory.

Final arrangements for the fixture are currently being finalised, with high confidence that the match will proceed. One challenge for Hull KR is that if the game is held at the MKM Stadium, it would need to take place during the week.

This is due to Hull City having a home game on the Saturday of the proposed week, followed by Rovers flying out to Las Vegas on Sunday for their match against Leeds Rhinos at the Allegiant Stadium.

The match is scheduled to take place either on Thursday, 19th February or Friday, 20th.

Intriguingly, the interest shown by Qatar has sparked a renewed enthusiasm for the sport beyond its traditional global strongholds.
