The Hull-born actor has the lead role in the biopic about Tourette’s campaigner John Davidson MBE

The dad of a Hull actor who stars in the recently-released film I Swear booked an entire screening for family, friends and special guests to watch it together. Mike Aramayo’s son Robert Aramayo plays the lead role in I Swear.

Mike has now watched the film five times with his wife, Joanne Aramayo. He said theatres have been “packed” and film has been doing incredibly well. He booked the screening at Reel cinema on Friday, October 10, as a “celebration of Rob’s rise to stardom”.

Robert Aramayo started out at Hull Truck Youth Theatre, before going to drama school at Juilliard in New York and landing roles in Game of Thrones and Lord of The Rings: The Rings of Power. His performance as Tourette’s campaigner John Davidson MBE in the biopic has earned widespread acclaim from critics.

Describing the night, Mike Aramayo said: “It was like our own little Hull premiere. We had a lock-in at the end and a drinks reception, it was amazing.”

Mike also thanked Reel cinema manager Paul Watson and staff for going “over and above” to make it special. At the end of the screening, the charity Tourettes-syndrome Inclusion in the Community (TIC) took questions from the audience.

Among the special guests were friends and supporters from the acting community in Hull, including playwright Richard Bean and actor Martin Barrass. Gareth Tudor Price, the former artistic director of Hull Truck, was also in attendance, as was Lee Green, who was director of Hull Truck Youth Theatre when Robert and his sister Laura acted there.

Kim Mitchell CEO and cofounder of Tourettes-syndrome Inclusion in the Community (TIC) said it had been a “privilege” to attend. She described Robert’s performance as potentially “award-winning”.

She said: “As a local charity fighting hard for awareness of a very misunderstood condition and supporting over 900 local families, we are fully aware of the possibilities for change this movie can make. Bringing the topic of Tourette’s syndrome away from the public punchline and creating instead conversation and acceptance.

“We can’t thank Johnny Davidson MBE, Robert Aramayo, Scott Ellis Watson and of course Kirk Jones along with everyone else involved, enough.”
