Residents can receive a free smart device or laptop following the completion of a short digital skills course
East Riding of Yorkshire Council is aiming to encourage people to develop their confidence in using the internet. ‘Get Online Week’ is an annual inclusion campaign which aims to tackle the digital divide.
The council services are hosting a range of services to help residents get online, across its adult learning, library, and leisure centre facilities. There will be digital roadshows, free mobile SIM cards, and educational drop-in events are among the range of events.
The Adult Learning and Employability service is running a digital gifting scheme, where eligible residents can receive a free smart device or laptop, that they can keep, following the completion of a short digital skills course. They are also running Digital Help Hubs at their Adult Learning Centres, to provide help and support with using devices.
East Riding libraries will provide free SIM cards and mobile data, provided by the National Databank from the Good Things Foundation. The scheme is aimed to help digitally excluded people get connected, providing eligible residents with SIM cards with up to 40GB of data.
The libraries are also running digital drop-in events, to provide basic digital help and support, alongside digital art sessions to learn how to use digital devices and software for creative purposes. East Riding Council also provides a ‘progress online’ triage tool, accessed online or at East Riding Libraries, that refer residents to the correct level of support.
Councillor Anne Handley, East Riding of Yorkshire Council leader said: “These are a fantastic range of events, showcasing our dedication to lifelong learning. We encourage interested residents to take advantage of the resources and support available and develop their digital skills.”
Community VISION CIO are funded by the council to deliver the Digital Inclusion 4 All project. Their team are hosting in-person roadshow events across the area to help residents find out more about digital support available.
