Hull City face a nervous wait to find out the extent of the injury that saw star defender Charlie Hughes miss Saturday’s 2-1 win at Stoke City.
Hughes was named on the bench at the bet365 Stadium, and though he was in the travelling party, he didn’t actually take his place on the touchline, and therefore, Sergej Jakirovic’s side were a man down in their matchday squad.
Boss Jakirovic says the problem is a recurrence of the hamstring issue which sidelined the 21-year-old for a spell last season, and he’s set to have a scan on Sunday.
The Tigers chief remains hopeful that Hughes will be fit enough to return to the squad on Friday night when City host promotion rivals Middlesbrough at the MKM Stadium, looking for a second straight win.
The City will also hope Cody Drameh recovers from the issue with his glute, which saw him not in the squad that returned from the Potteries with three points, thanks to a Semi Ajayi equaliser and a 90th-minute winner from Joe Gelhardt.
“I didn’t want to take a risk to put him to play because this is the same hamstring he had [an issue with] last season, and he missed two or three months,” Jakirovic told Hull Live.
“Now we are waiting for the result of his MRI scan, and then we will see. He’s feeling fine, so we will see after the MRI what the situation is, and I hope he will be able to play against Middlesbrough.
“Cody (Drameh) felt seven days ago, his glutes. Yesterday (Friday), he tried to train, but the pain is still there, so we left him out of the squad, and I hope he will be back soon.”
Jakirovic also withdrew Ryan Giles in the second half with Akin Famewo coming on to replace the left-back, but says it was tactical in a bid to stop the threat posed by Million Manhoef.
“Tactical,” Jakirovic explained. “He (Giles) didn’t control anything there, but we agreed. With this player, you must be very, very tight on the body. If you allow him a space, he will kill you, but he did sometimes.”
