A national charity hopes to raise vital funds after opening a new shop in the heart of Hull. National palliative care and bereavement charity Sue Ryder has opened the doors to its new store in Kingston Retail Park, which is now packed with pre-loved goods to help it raise money for people facing a terminal illness or experiencing grief.

The shop was officially opened by Karl Turner, MP for Kingston upon Hull, who was joined by Sue Ryder staff, volunteers, and shoppers to celebrate the launch. The shop will offer a range of high-quality donated goods including clothing, homewares, books, and accessories, all at affordable prices.

And every purchase will help raise money for Sue Ryder’s palliative and end-of-life care in the charity’s hospices and in people’s homes, as well as its free online bereavement support.

Karl Turner, said: “Sue Ryder provides essential care and support for people facing the toughest times, and I’m honoured to officially open their new shop. This is more than just a place to shop, it’s a space for community and allows for the reuse of pre-loved items.

“I’d like to encourage everyone to support the shop, whether by donating, volunteering, or simply by dropping in.”

Claire-Jayne Sawyer, shop manager at Sue Ryder’s Hull shop said: “We’re thrilled to open our doors and welcome everyone into the new Sue Ryder shop. We are also incredibly grateful to MP Karl Turner for supporting this special moment.

“Our shops are more than just places to find a bargain, every item donated, every hour volunteered, and every purchase made helps us provide more care and support, so no one has to face death or grief alone. This shop is now part of the community, and with your support, we can make a real difference.”

The charity is now calling on the local community to support the new shop by donating pre-loved items and signing up to volunteer. Donations can be dropped off during opening hours, and volunteering roles are also available, offering flexible hours, a great way to meet new people, and the chance to learn new skills.

Sue Ryder has more than 400 charity shops across the UK, including specialist vintage and retro shops for those who love digging through vinyl, are a 1940s enthusiast or love the 1990s. It also has a number of superstores and £3 or less shops, as well as an Instagram account.

It was originally launched as The Sue Ryder Foundation in 1953 by World War II Special Operations Executive volunteer Sue Ryder, evolving into the organisation it is today to provide care and support for people living with terminal illnesses and neurological conditions, as well as individuals who are coping with a bereavement.

The Sue Ryder Hull shop is based at Unit 5 Kingston Retail Park, Holderness Road. The opening comes soon after the opening a new Peacocks store in Prospect Shopping Centre.
