Organisers thanked Tony Booth, Tommy Coyle and Nick Barmby for joining them

Organisers of a charity walk have thanked a trio of sports stars for joining them on their journey. Former boxing legends Tony Booth and Tommy Coyle joined ex Premier League midfielder Nick Barmby and scores of hardy walkers on the ten mile trek from Beverley and Hull, all to raise money for the Alzheimer’s Society.

A close friend of the walkers has Alzheimer’s and, seeing the toll it is taking on all of her family, the group decided to put their determination into action, lacing up their walking boots and arming themselves with collection buckets for the walk. And the walk was such a success that they now hope to make it an annual event.

“It went really well, we raised £6,180 which has now been sent off to the Alzheimer’s Society. We got £1,330 on the actual walk itself and the rest was from our fundraising pages. Some people are keeping theirs open until January so we can carry on collecting money.

“The reason we organised it is one of the lads I work with, his wife has advanced Alzheimer’s so we decided as a team to walk it. Alzheimer’s is always at the fore and you see it on the news all the time and we know people who are unfortunately suffering from the disease.

“We all really like our colleague and we’re a very close knit team so we wanted to show some support for the charity, and also for our colleague. He’s now had to go part time to support his wife.

“Nicky Barmby walked it with us as did Tommy Coyle and Tony Booth. They‘re superb, all of them.

“I really want to thank all of them, as well as Nicky’s wife Mandy – she’s an absolute jewel and has worked with us in the past.

“There was no need for any of them to do the walk with us. They did it out of the goodness of their heart really and it really helped to raise the profile.

“We also have to thank the landlord at The Cross Keys in Hull for supplying us with some food and The Punch in the city centre where we ended the walk. Morrisons also supplied us with some water which was great.

“It wasn’t a march or a race, and we had a good mix of men and women, different ages, some bringing their dogs with them – it was a great day and went off all really well. We’re thinking of doing it on a yearly basis now because it was such a great event – we had good weather, it stayed dry and we had lots of support.”
