The Tigers’ Yorkshire neighbours have seemingly been condemned to relegation with a points deduction coming their way

Hull City’s Championship rivals Sheffield Wednesday have filed for administration as the financial crisis at Hillsborough continues under the disastrous ownership of Dejphon Chansiri.

City‘s Yorkshire neighbours are bottom of the Championship and have been in crisis for months with continued late payments to players and behind-the-scenes staff.

Chansiri has been charged by the Football League with breaching EFL regulations regarding payment obligations, while the club has no fewer than six embargoes against their name, along with a fee restriction prohibiting them from buying players, in what is a similar punishment levied on the Tigers earlier this summer.

Tuesday night’s 1-0 home loss to Middlesbrough saw the game played out in front of just over 7,000 spectators at Hillsborough, with more than half of those in the Leppings Lane end of the ground following the Teesside outfit, amid another fan protest.

The notice was filed at 10.01am on Friday morning at the Insolvency and Companies Court and is the latest hammer blow for supporters who have been trying to remove the owner for months. According to the Daily Mail, Begbies Traynor will oversee the administration period in the hope of finding a buyer.

Wednesday already owe £1m to HMRC in unpaid taxes, which saw them issued a winding up petition last week, while a host of other debts are owed.

It also means the Owls, who have six points from their opening 11 games of a dismal campaign, will be hit by a points deduction under EFL rules.

A 12-point deduction is automatically placed on clubs entering administration and the Steel City outfit will become the first Championship club since Derby County in 2021 to suffer the same fate.

City are yet to face the Owls this season, but are due at Hillsborough for a Christmas showdown on Boxing Day in the pair’s first meeting of the campaign, before the MKM Stadium return on March 21.
