East Riding Of Yorkshire Council says it ‘sends a clear message that we take proactive steps to protect communities and tackle antisocial behaviour’
A Bridlington man has been served a Criminal Behaviour Order (CPO) as part of “firm action” against “disruptive street drinking”. John William Curtis, 37, of no fixed address, had “taken no notice of the chances or advice that has been given to him” which left East Riding Of Yorkshire Council with “no choice but to pursue formal action” in partnership with Humberside Police.
Curtis was served a CPO at Beverley Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday, October 8. It followed complaints from councillors and the police for breaching a Community Protection Notice (CPN).
This had previously been issued to him for “continuing to drink alcohol and associate with others who were drinking, which was part of his notice”. The latest action saw Curtis handed the CPO along with an £80 fine and other costs.
The order, in force for two years, prohibits him from “entering the area known as Ebor Gardens, or any Public Space Protection Order area within Bridlington with any alcohol open or sealed, as per the PSPO 2025 variation document”.
A breach of a criminal behaviour order is a criminal offence and on summary conviction in magistrates’ court can lead to a term of imprisonment of up to six months, an unlimited fine or both. On indictment, in a crown court, it can lead to a prison term of up to five years, an unlimited fine or both.
Nigel Brignall, manager of the anti-social behaviour team at East Riding Of Yorkshire Council, said: “This criminal behaviour order sends a clear message that we take proactive steps to protect communities and tackle antisocial behaviour. We always try and help people, but if they not engage with us, we will take decisive action.
“We’re dedicated to ensuring that the East Riding is a good place to live, and taking firm action against those engaging in disruptive street drinking.”
The action comes amid a targeted focus this year as part of the Clear Hold Build project in Bridlington.
