There’s no midweek games in the Championship this week but the news cycle continues to grind on.

The city of Sheffield has been the epicentre for much of the activity, with Chris Wilder back at United – and more woes at Wednesday.

We bring you a round-up of all the latest from across the second tier, which is currently led by Middlesbrough and propped up by Wilder’s Blades.

From transfer talk, to new jobs – here’s the best of the news from Hull City’s Championship rivals.

Prime position

Michael Carrick has landed himself a new role after leaving Middlesbrough.

The former Manchester United midfielder was in charge at The Riverside from October 2022 to June this year, before being replaced by Rob Edwards.

After an intial new manager bounce Boro never quite dragged themselves into the play-offs and he left 12 months after signing a new three-year contract.

Boro have thrived under Edwards, winning four and drawing one of their five Championship games so far.

As for Carrick, he hasn’t yet returned to the dug-out but he has started work as a pundit – and was on duty for Prime Video during Tottenham’s Champions League victory over Villarreal on Tuesday evening.

Wild side

Chris Wilder has returned to Sheffield United for a third stint in charge at Bramall Lane – having left the club on June 18.

Ruben Selles’ wretched start to the season has seen him also moved on – with Wilder back in the hotseat.

He isn’t however, minded to score any cheap points. “I wasn’t looking for an apology [from the owners],” Wilder told BBC Radio Sheffield.

“I’m not looking to come in here and be smug about the situation. It’s my football club and we’re bottom of the division. We’ve played six, lost six, that is not a good place.

“There’s a lack of respect to the football club which has to be owned at the moment. I have to help the players and change that around.

“I’m not smug about the situation. I’m not sitting back and saying ‘oh, it’s great they lost’ I think some managers might be but I’m not. It’s my life, it’s my family’s life and it’s my pals’ life. We want the club to succeed.”

Wilder’s first game in charge comes at home to Charlton this weekend, they face the Tigers on October 4.

Last season’s Championship player of the season Gus Hamer started Friday’s drubbing at Ipswich on the bench – something Wilder intends to rectify.

“Gus is a player that I love and we need him at the top of the pitch. We don’t need him in a different position.

“Whether he plays as a 10 or off the side. Combinations, slide balls, crosses, assists, goals, big moments… He’s arguably the best player in the division.”

A bit Grim

Meanwhile across the Steel City Sheffield Wednesday fans were outnumbered by about two-to-one as they continue to boycott certain games in protest at club owner Dejphon Chansiri.

One of those matches was the Carabao Cup third round tie with League Two Grimsby Town, conquerors of Manchester United in the previous round.

More than 6,000 travelling fans revelled in the spotlight and another giant-killing as Jaze Kabia’s second-half header sealed a 1-0 win at Hillsborough

But Owls head coach Henrik Pedersen, who made wholesale changes to protect his senior players in a threadbare squad due to the club’s financial crisis, said he was proud of his players.

Pedersen said: “I’m disappointed that we have lost, but behind this loss I’m again really happy for the performance from our young guys.

“In the big picture now I’ve seen three cup games with our young guys and when I look back from when we started the pre-season and to see where all the young guys are today, then I can only be proud of this development.

“Tonight I think we played a very equal game against a really good Grimsby team and our boys showed that they can also, in a game like this, make a really good performance.”

Up in Flam-es

Flamengo Director of Football José Boto has lifted the lid on the transfer breakdown that saw Mikey Johnston stay at West Bromwich Albion.

The winger looked set for a £5milllion move away from The Hawthorns only for the deal to break down amid claims of a backlash from Flamengo supporters.

In the end Johnston stayed with the Baggies and he has started four games so far for a team that is fifth in the table under new manager Ryan Mason.

However, things could have been so different, with Boto revealing what happened in July.

According to UOL, via Sport Witness, it was the fans’ response that did for the deal.

Boto said: “In Mikey’s case, he was one of the players we saw would help the team with things we needed.

“And his arrival wouldn’t have anything to do with Samuel Lino’s absence; both would have come.

“When you try to make your first purchase, you get hit until you say enough is enough.

“I also think there was a timing issue, because if he hadn’t been the first, if he had come in between Saúl and Samuel Lino, the fans might have had a different reaction.

“And I also don’t know if it’s the fans or the press that’s promoting this among the fans.

“But it’s also something that doesn’t worry me much. What’s important is whether the players truly have the characteristics that serve the club.”
