Perfectly crispy batter and fantastic real ales make the Humber Tavern a delight
I am spoilt for choice with pubs and bars in Hull, but sometimes I feel the need to venture further out for a change of scenery. One of my favourite haunts is Paull, with its beautifully bleak, muddy landscape and wildlife.
The village is home to the 14th Century St Andrew’s Church and Fort Paull, a former military fortification turned museum. Paull Holme Strays, managed by the Yorkshire Wildlife Trust, is also a tranquil place for a walk.
On Main Street, you will find a pub called Humber Tavern with views over the Humber estuary. Location-wise, it is perfect after a walk, nursing a pint while watching the boats or various types of water birds.
There are a decent selection of beers, ciders, premium lagers, and cask ales. For our food, we ordered typical pub favourites – scampi and chips, and fish and chips.
Both were priced under £10, which seemed reasonable. For a vegetarian/vegan option, we went for a vegetable sizzler with rice and fries.
We ordered at the bar and found the service to be really friendly; it had a family-run pub feel. The atmosphere inside was welcoming, but the sheltered beer garden can’t be beaten, so we tucked ourselves into a sunny spot and admired the views.
It was not long before the food came. Both the scampi and fish had a clean, crisp batter and the hand-cut chips were delicious.
The sizzler vegetables were beautifully cooked, almost seared, and full of natural sweetness. Also, the portion was gigantic; for once I really struggled to finish my food.
If I ordered it again, I would probably ask for the barbecue sauce on the side because the sugariness overwhelmed the vegetables. I’d prefer to have it as a drizzle on top, or perhaps in a pot to dip my chips into.
The music was quite loud at times, which made conversation difficult, but these were minor quibbles. Ultimately, I left the pub feeling relaxed, well-fed, and impressed.
