Striker Kyle Joseph says his goal in the 4-2 defeat at Bristol City was anything but a consolation as he finally opened his account for Hull City in his 20th league appearance in Black and Amber.

Joseph turned in Oli McBurnie’s pass in the final moments of the Ashton Gate contest to reduce the arrears, and while it meant little in the context of a game that had long since gone beyond Sergej Jakirovic’s side.

After being hampered by injury following his £2.5m move from Blackpool in January, the 23-year-old forward opened his account and believes the confidence he can take from it shouldn’t be underestimated.

“Yeah, it’s massive for my confidence,” he told Hull Live. “As soon as it went in, it was just a big sigh of relief. Obviously, it’s a bit mixed with the result, but yeah, it’s an amazing feeling to finally get off the mark.

“I know it’s been a while coming, and I know I would have liked to have got off (the mark) sooner, but I’ve put myself out there, I’ve had chances to score, I probably could have walked away with more than one, but it’s about being there.

“How many times are you willing to miss the score? So yeah, I’m delighted to finally get off the mark and hopefully I can build on that after the international break and really help and contribute to the team.”

Joseph hopes the two-week break will have been good for the players, especially after a long run from the beginning of pre-season to that heavy loss at Ashton Gate.

“One hundred per cent,” he said when asked if the break came at a good time. “I think the international break probably came at a good time. The lads can switch off mentally and spend time with their families. That’s massive for all the lads too because it’s been a long time since the start of pre-season, where we’ve got to now.

“We’ve done really well over the past seven or eight weeks. The last two weeks have probably been a bit harder for us in terms of results, illness, and stuff like that.

“It’ll be a good time to get away from the training ground, get away from football, and just switch off and come back being mentally ready to go again for September.”
