A joint footpath and cycleway is being created near Beverley, costing £460,000.
East Riding of Yorkshire Council said work on the 0.5 mile (0.8km) upgrade, which started earlier, would be completed by November.
It involves widening an existing path linking the Westwood, from Beverley Racecourse, up to the service station next to Killingwoldgraves roundabout.
Temporary traffic lights will be in place during the works, with the footpath closed for safety reasons, officials said.
The scheme, funded by Active Travel England, is a continuation of a recently completed widening of the footpath on the A1079 Hull to York road towards Bishop Burton.
Once this phase has been completed, pedestrians and cyclists would be able to enjoy a continuous route between Bishop Burton and Beverley Racecourse, the council added.
Councillor Paul West, the council’s cabinet member for environment and transport, said: “We want this improved footpath and cyclepath to become a much easier, more pleasant and safer route between Beverley and Bishop Burton and become more popular with walkers and cyclists.”
