Work has started on a scheme to create a joint footpath and cycleway on a popular stretch of road into Beverley, East Riding of Yorkshire Council has announced. The council is investing £460,000 on the project which will widen a narrow path running next to the road from the Killingwoldgraves roundabout to Beverley Westwood.

The aim is to improve the route for cyclists with work beginning today (Monday, September 1). Work is expected to be complete by November.

With a width of 2.5m to 3m, the new path will link link the Westwood, from Beverley Racecourse, up to the service station, next to Killingwoldgraves roundabout. It carries on from a recently completed widening of the footpath on the other side of Killingwoldgraves roundabout leading into Bishop Burton.

During the work, a 30mph temporary speed limit will be in place. Temporary traffic lights will be in place between 9.30am and 3.30pm Mondays to Fridays and 9.30am to 3pm on Saturdays.

The current footpath will also be closed while the work is carried out for safety reasons, the council said. When finished, pedestrians and cyclists will be able to enjoy a continuous route between Bishop Burton and Beverley Racecourse.

Councillor Paul West, the council’s cabinet member for environment and transport, spoke about creating a safer route. He said: “We want this improved footpath and cyclepath to become a much easier, more pleasant and safer route between Beverley and Bishop Burton and become more popular with walkers and cyclists.”
