Sergej Jakirovic admits he’s excited about waking up on Tuesday morning knowing the transfer window has shut and attention can turn back to the football.

City go into the final day with question marks over the likes of Charlie Hughes and Ivor Pandur, while the Tigers could yet move to bring somebody in, provided they can ship somebody out.

It’s been a difficult period for the Tigers, given the transfer restrictions they’re working under and they’ll face the same situation again in January, but for now, Jakirovic will be pleased to see the back of a period he feels is far too long.

“Yes, of course (I can’t wait for it to close), because we also have some offers for our players, so we will see. Unfortunately, we cannot buy anybody, but still we can sell,” he said.

The Croatian head coach, who has guided the Tigers through a rocky period this summer, has joined the growing chorus of managers who believe the window should close before the season starts as top-flight clubs take spending past the £2bn mark.

“I don’t know why (it closes so late), we trained for two months with one team (and then it can all change). For me, this transfer period is too long. I think every manager shares the same opinion. It’s almost three-and-a-half months.

“I see that in England in the last week, everyone is so excited to do something. They’ve spent a couple of billion (pounds). I see it every day on television,” he continued.

“I knew it before because I’ve been following English football for almost 20 years, so I know everything about English football, and they like to spend the money, the clubs. In a Croatian newspaper, they wrote that they spent 2.6 billion pounds until now and will see in these last couple of days what happens.”
