Evacuated residents were able to return home during the night
The safety cordon put in place following reports of ‘suspected explosive materials’ being found inside a property in Beverley has now been lifted. The incident unfolded on Watts Road on Friday, when Humberside Police were called to an altercation at 8.30am.
Residents were evacuated and road closures were put in place. In the first of three updates overnight, police said two men had been arrested and the safety cordon reduced.
A spokesman said: “At around 8.30am this morning, we were called to reports of an altercation between three men, believed to be known to each other, outside a property where one man is believed to have been assaulted with what was described as a hammer. Officers swiftly attended and located a 54-year-old man at the scene who was subsequently arrested on suspicion of assault, and the second man allegedly fled inside a nearby address.
“Officers forced entry and located a 27-year-old man inside the property who was also arrested on suspicion of grievous bodily harm. Upon searching the property officers reportedly discovered weapons including firearms and a hammer, along with suspected explosive materials.
“A third man, 35-years-old, was taken to hospital for treatment to minor injuries.” Just before midnight, a further update confirmed a 100m cordon remained in place and Chief Superintendent Simon Vickers said: “We’re working closely with East Riding Council, and local residents have been evacuated to a safe location whilst specialist search officers remain on scene.”
At 2.35am, a third update confirmed the cordon had been lifted, with a scene guard still in place. A statement read: “The safety cordon put in place following reports of suspected explosive materials being found inside a property on Watts Road in Beverley has now been lifted and residents are able to safely return home.
“Enquiries continue and a scene guard remains in place around the property to allow officers to establish the full circumstances around the report. A 27-year-old man who was arrested inside the property in connection with the report remains in custody assisting officers with the ongoing investigation at this time.
“Thank you to all our residents and those in the local area for their continued patience, assistance and understanding whilst all necessary precautions were taken to ensure the safety of our communities.”
