St Helens’ injury concerns have been confirmed, with rising star Owen Dagnall sustaining a Grade 3 hamstring injury during their 16-10 victory over Hull FC.

The setback is a significant blow for the 19-year-old, who has enjoyed an impressive breakthrough season, scoring eight tries in 12 appearances across all competitions. Dagnall made his senior bow in the Challenge Cup third round against West Hull in February, before earning his Super League debut in Round 12 against Huddersfield Giants.

Head coach Paul Wellens confirmed the injury blow to the St Helens Star, with the team set to travel to Sewell Group Craven Park on Friday.

“It is a Grade 3 hamstring tear, which is going to mean he will be touch and go for the back end of the season,” Wellens said.

“It is a massive disappointment because Owen, since he has come into the team and played regularly, has done a fantastic job for us.

“He is certainly a player everyone enjoys watching, and is an exciting player, but he has had an unfortunate blow there.

“He has been exceptional this year. If you watch the games, you would not think he was a young man in his first year as a professional and has impacted the games in such a positive way.

“Whilst it is a huge blow for Owen, it is also one for us as a team as well. Fortunately, we do not think it is a surgical procedure, but he is going to undergo a series of injections that may help promote healing.”

As St Helens continue their push for second spot on the Super League table, they will also be without veteran winger Kyle Feldt this week against Hull KR due to head injury protocols.

The Red V outfit currently sit third on the table, two points behind reigning champions Wigan Warriors, who travel to Catalans Dragons this weekend.

Former North Queensland Cowboys star Feldt meanwhile has scored 18 tries in 15 appearances across his debut campaign in England, alongside 29 goals.

“[Feldt] took a bang early on in the game but did not feel any ill effects, but after the game he reported feeling unwell and having a headache to the doctor,” Wellens confirmed.

“He then failed his SCAT 6 head assessment, so we then follow the 11-day concussion protocol. We will be without Kyle as well.”
