Hull City’s star man is wanted by a number of clubs

It’s been a summer of speculation surrounding Charlie Hughes‘ future at Hull City and that is likely to continue until the transfer window closes on Monday night at 7pm.

Coventry City have seen £4m and £7m bids rejected by the Tigers while Sheffield United and former City boss Ruben Selles have enquired about the 21-year-old.

City believe that if the ex-Wigan Athletic favourite has a good season at the MKM Stadium and continues to develop, his value will continue to soar and he could be worth nearly £20m next summer, so would only consider a sale this time around if the bid is significant, and almost too good to refuse.

Hughes’ absence from Saturday’s 3-0 loss at home to Blackburn Rovers raised some suspicion amongst nervous supporters, though it was down to the illness that had swept through the camp in the days leading up to the game, and he’s expected to be in the squad at Bristol City this weekend.

Social media was then awash with speculation on Saturday night that Crystal Palace were coming in for Hughes, but Hull Live understands that at the time of writing, there had been no fresh bids or interest registered in the defender.

City’s stance remains the same as it has all summer. The club do not want to sell Hughes and view him as a crucial part of Sergej Jakirovic’s plans this season, however, the obvious caveat is that in the final days and hours of the window, anything can happen.

Hughes’ future was a key topic on the latest episode of the 1904 Club podcast, and David Prutton, the Hull-born former Premier League midfielder, admits that a major bid would necessitate a conversation.

“There’s a lot of football to come from a young player that’s obviously very highly regarded at City,” Prutton said. “Given what we were looking at over the course of the weekend (on Sky Sports about City’s finances), with the transfer situation. If a bid suddenly comes in that’s seven-figures plus, then it changes the conversation completely.

“I’ve not seen enough of him to suggest that would be the case (ready for the Premier League). On the flip side of that, I have always found that players adapt to it in different ways.”
