Shopping vouchers and free visits to attractions are to be given out by Hull City Council as a part of a plan reinvigorate high streets in the city. The council has launched the second round of public engagement sessions to help shape Phase 1 of its Community Highstreets Programme.

The council has allocated £6 million to spend on improving 16 neighbourhoods and local centres spread across the city. The Community Highstreets Programme is a citywide scheme that seeks to enhance the areas which will hopefully in turn lead to increased satisfaction, footfall and commercial spend, as well as reduce shop vacancy rates in the areas. The scheme is set to be enacted in three phases.

Phase 1

East area – Barham Road, Greenwich Avenue and Holderness Road/Woodford area

North area – Chanterlands Avenue and Grampian Way

West areaAnlaby Road /Coltman Street and Gipsyville area

The aim of the latest round of engagement, which can be done either online or in-person, is to give residents, business owners and the public the opportunity to have their say and input on the outcomes of the project. The plans have been shaped around feedback that was given in public engagement sessions that were held earlier this year. The survey will be available online here until Friday, October 24.

As an added incentive the council is offering the opportunity for each person who completes a survey to enter a draw for a chance to win prizes including behind the scenes visits to Hull Maritime Attractions and Love2Shop gift cards of up to £100. The draw will be held one week after the survey closes and the three randomly selected winners will be contacted on October 31 with details of their prize.

Cllr Ted Dolman, portfolio holder for communities at the council, said: “This is an exciting project which will help to enhance local centres and help to restore pride within neighbourhoods. This is a community-led project and the council has already had fantastic community buy in from residents and businesses alike.

“From that, the mini masterplan has adapted as a result and we look forward to sharing that and hearing more opinions of the public during this latest round of engagement. The council wants to create sustainable neighbourhoods and resilient communities and this project is just the start of that.”
