Hull City club legend Brian Horton admitted the Tigers’ dramatic 3-2 win over Oxford United was one of the best Championship games he’s witnessed in recent times.

City needed an Oliver McBurnie winner in the 93rd minute to see off Horton’s former club in a thrilling encounter at the MKM Stadium on Sunday afternoon.

Having led inside a minute through Joe Gelhardt and then Matt Crooks, Gary Rowett’s U’s twice fought back to level inside an absorbing opening half-hour.

Horton, who was the Tigers’ special guest and introduced to the 20,000-strong crowd at half-time, was impressed with what he saw from his former club, and in particular, John Lundstram.

“It’s always fantastic to come back to Hull City,” Horton told the 1904 Club. “It’s such a special place, and the reception I got at half-time, and from the Oxford United fans, was absolutely brilliant.

“The game was absolutely incredible, and it was one of the best games I’ve seen for a long, long time, both sides having a go. No defensive formations, it was really exciting football, and to score the goal so late on from McBurnie, from my perspective, it was a great game of football, and that’s what I like to see. I hate to see five at the back and all defensive stuff, so it was a credit to both sides, the football that was played.

“I thought Lundstram was outstanding,” he continued. “He’s the holding midfield player that allows the full-backs to go because he’s always just sitting out there. His passing is excellent, and I thought he was the best player on the pitch.

“I thought the crowd were magnificent, they were getting behind the team. They’ve made a positive start to the season, and they look a very attacking side. I didn’t see that much of them last year, but to come in (Jakirovic) and make those tactical things – the players like that, they like to be thinking that they’re going to play to win the game rather than play for a draw. I thought his (Jakirovic) tactics were spot on. They’ve scored three goals at home, OK, they’ve conceded two, but the main thing is to get the three points.

“I was impressed with (Joel) Ndala, but it was a good all-round team performance. There were 20,000 people, it was a great atmosphere, Oxford United fans were good as well, but obviously when City get the winner so late on, a lot of things are forgotten because you’ve got the three points.”
