Hull City have been handed a major boost with the news that star winger Mohamed Belloumi is closing in on a return to first-team action after a long lay-off with a serious knee injury.

Belloumi has made major progress in recent days and has returned to full training after missing the majority of last season with an ACL injury he picked up in the 1-0 loss at Oxford United on November 5.

The exciting winger was a major loss to the Tigers last season, along with Liam Millar, and while the Canadian is still a month or so away from a return, Belloumi’s imminent arrival on the first team scene will delight everybody associated with City.

Initially, boss Sergej Jakirovic was planning on having both Belloumi and Liam Millar back and available after the international break, but the Algerian is now at a stage where he could well be considered for first-team action, assuming there are no setbacks in training next week.

Jakirovic says the winger, who arrived on transfer deadline day almost 12 months ago, could be involved when City host Blackburn Rovers next Saturday lunchtime at the MKM Stadium in their second home outing of the season.

Sunday’s first home game of the campaign against Oxford will come too soon, but to have him potentially available off the bench against Rovers will be a big shot in the arm to City, Jakirovic and Belloumi himself after a long and difficult period of rehab.

“Mo is in better condition,” Jakirovic told Hull Live. “He trained with us already with the group, in normal contact training, so it’s good. I think maybe next week against Blackburn, he will be in the squad, maybe, but Liam not yet. “He’s trained normally with us, and yes, he’s in full contact training, so he looks good.”

Millar, meanwhile, continues to tick all the boxes on his recovery sheet and remains on track, though the Canadian winger is not expected to be fit enough to return to first team until after the international break next month.
