The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) has issued new advice for billpayers across the country. Anyone who claims certain benefits is being told to make an essential check before August 24 to see if they can benefit from a discount to their energy bills. The Warm Home Discount can provide some households with a £150 discount on their bills throughout the winter period.

However, in order to be eligible for the scheme, households have to meet strict eligibility criteria. The government has also removed many previous restrictions on the scheme to help include more vulnerable households that can benefit from the discount.

Writig on X, the DWP said: “Are you named on your electricity bill? If you are on a means-tested benefit, make sure you check before 24 Aug 2025 If eligible, you will get £150 off your bill this winter through the Warm Home Discount”

  • Income Support
  • Pension Credit (Guarantee Credit and Savings Credit)

How is the Warm Home Discount provided?

If you’re a credit customer, the £150 will be credited to your electricity account, and if you’re on Pay As You Go or Prepayment, you’ll receive a voucher to top-up your meter.

Minister for Energy Consumers Miatta Fahnbulleh said: “We took decisive action earlier this year to expand the Warm Home Discount, giving more working families certainty and peace of mind before winter. I now want to make sure as many eligible households as possible get £150 off their energy bill, putting more money in their pockets as part of our Plan for Change.

“If you know someone who might be eligible – please start spreading the word to family and friends, encouraging them to check they are named on their energy bill.”
