The 80th anniversary of the end of the Second World War will be marked in Hull this week. Victory over Japan (VJ) Day took place on August 15, 1945, which effectively brought the six-year conflict to a close.

The mark the anniversary of the surrender of Imperial Japan, a VJ Day remembrance event is to be held at the Cenotaph in Hull city centre on Friday (August 15). The Lord Mayor, Councillor Cheryl Payne, will lay a wreath at the ceremony which is being organised by the Royal British Legion and starts at 10.50am.

The Lord Mayor said: “The 80th anniversary of Victory over Japan Day is a very significant moment, particularly in a city such as Hull, which was significantly affected by the Second World War. Well over a thousand people were killed in our city during the conflict, with many more injured.

“Those devastating times will still be remembered by many older people in our communities, and it is hard to imagine what they had to experience. I will be very proud to represent Hull at the Cenotaph, as we remember those who helped bring the fighting to an end.”

Hull City Council will also participate in a national two-minute silence, which will be held later that day at noon. Council staff have been invited to take part, whether working in council buildings or elsewhere, to allow them to pay tribute to all those who served and the sacrifices they made to bring an end to the war.
