Activities include sports, crafts, music and more
Children in the county have plenty of fun events to look forward to for the rest of the summer holidays. East Riding Council has arranged a number of free family play days as well as SEND activities organised by Barnardo’s and with a contribution from parents and carers.
East Riding Children’s Centres are running fun, free events for families throughout August. These include crafts and games, silent discos, music and dance, with healthy snacks.
There will also be a range of teams at the events so families can find out about local services such as Citizens Advice, leisure services and sports classes. Councillor Victoria Aitken, cabinet member for children, families and education, said: “I’m pleased our Children’s Centres can offer children and their families some free activities this summer.
“It helps families keep children active, entertained and happy in their local community, without them having to spend money.” Events throughout July have been held in Pocklington, Cottingham, Hornsea and Bridlington; the free August events taking place include:

Meanwhile, Barnardo’s run SEND groups for children and young people in the East Riding, aged five to 11 and 12 to 18. Each Saturday, ten groups run each week across six different locations in Beverley, Bridlington, Cottingham, Goole, Hedon and Market Weighton, the inclusive sessions offering games, arts, crafts, sports, music, drama and fun with friends.
Amy Wobbaka, children’s service manager at Barnardo’s Disability Support and Inclusion (DSI) Service, said: “Our youth groups offer a vibrant and welcoming space designed specifically for children and young people with disabilities, to come together, build friendships, and explore their potential in a nurturing environment. We aim to create a sense of belonging, independence and confidence among our members, empowering them to embrace their unique abilities and reach their full potential.”
Cllr Aitken said: “These groups offer a great opportunity for children, young people and their families to come together – promoting socialisation, teamwork and communication skills – and helping every child to learn, grow and thrive.” Barnardo’s Bumble B sessions run on Saturdays and throughout the week during school holidays at the following locations:
