Frank Lampard admits he can understand why there is growing interest in Hull City’s Charlie Hughes after watching the centre-back deliver a commanding performance Sky Blues are one of the clubs keen on signing Hughes.

Lampard’s Sky Blues are one of the clubs keen on signing Hughes, and have seen £4m and £7m bids rebuffed by the Tigers, who do not want to sell their star man.

Hughes, along with central defensive partner Semi Ajayi, kept Coventry at arm’s length throughout a stalemate in the Midlands to give Sergej Jakirovic a point in his first Championship outing.

“Yeah, he’s a good player, a good player and he played very well,” Lampard told Hull Live when asked about the interest in the 21-year-old.

Lampard then went on to explain how he had prepared for the visit of the Tigers, admitting he watched some games of Jakirovic at other clubs to get a greater feeling of what would be coming his way. He also praised the transfer work done by the Tigers this summer given the transfer restrictions they’re working under.

“Slightly (challenging). I mean, a lot of the same players, they’ve added a couple of players, I think some smart additions as well from them, to be fair,” he continued in conversation with Hull Live.

“Even with the transfer situation, whatever, I think they’ve added good players with experience. We studied the manager and his previous team and the style, but it’s a different bunch of players in a different league, so it’s hard to sort of exactly convey that, and then we’ve watched their games.

“Probably Kasey Palmer not starting was the one we didn’t expect, but maybe that was just to be a bit sort of thicker in midfield and have pace on the sides of the pitch.

“We’d watched enough of their games to get a feeling of how they would be. I knew this would be a tough game. People were ringing me, going: ‘It’s a nice first game.’ It’s not, and you have to respect Hull, who are a good team.

“They’ll give teams difficult games this season, and they gave us a difficult game. I think we should have won, but they gave us a difficult game.”
