A Beverley day centre has held a “bra drive” to support a local breast cancer charity. Millers Day Services was central to the collection of over 1,000 bras throughout the month of June, in support of Hull and East Riding (HER) Breast Friends.

The proactive, volunteer-led charity based in Hull is dedicated to supporting individuals affected by breast cancer across Hull, the East Riding and North East Lincolnshire. The charity offers a wide range of services, including wig and bra banks, complimentary therapies, pink pamper days, monthly coffee mornings, breast awareness campaigns and support for those living with secondary or metastatic breast cancer.

East Riding Council ’s Millers Day Services contributed to a council-wide collection, though which 1,027 bras were donated to HER Breast Friends. Millers Day Services specialises in learning disabilities and complex care support.

The service provides a variety of facilities and scheduled activities, supporting service users within a safe and empowering environment. The collection at Millers Day Services was organised by support worker, Theresa Bray.

Both staff and service users contributed donations to support the charity, which promotes a positive approach to living with breast cancer. The bras collected from the donation drive will be used locally to support HER Breast Friends’ bra bank service.

The bras will also be distributed nationally and internationally, including to developing nations where access to such essentials is limited. Millers previously ran a successful bra collection in 2018, and this year’s campaign was organised starting in February, culminating in a month-long collection drive throughout June.

Jayne Beck, charity manager at HER Breast Friends, said: ‘’This is the second time Theresa and Millers Day Services have organised a ‘bra drive’. It is always great to come along, see the excitement in the centre, listen to their ideas and see their unique bra displays.

‘’This year they have smashed last time’s total, and their ‘June is Busting Out All Over’ collection will help so many people. It really is a wonderful campaign.”

Councillor Johnathan Owen, East Riding Council’s cabinet member for adults, health and care, said: “It’s inspiring to see staff and service users from Millers Day Services, as well as those from the wider council, come together for such a meaningful cause. The support from everyone involved has been incredible and it’s wonderful to support a local charity which provides such a vital service.’’
