He is mourning the loss of his owner – and is in desperate need of a new home. Ten-year-old Rufus was taken in by Oakwood Dog Rescue, in Hull, after his owner, a woman in her 70s, was hospitalised and tragically never returned.

The woman had welcomed Rufus into her life when he was just a puppy, and they formed an inseparable bond. A statement from the rescue centre reads: “We don’t normally advertise dogs that are not already in our care however, this handsome boy is Rufus, he is 10 years old and we need to advertise him asap as we don’t believe that he is going to cope very well in a kennel environment.

“He was very much loved and well cared for but unfortunately, the lady recently went into hospital and very sadly didn’t make it out.

“There was no one in place to take Rufus in the event of his mum no longer being around to care for him.”

The charity highlighted that it’s not uncommon for pets to face uncertain futures when their owners pass away, as not everyone has a family member able to take them in.

The statement continues: “Unfortunately, the reality is that we hear the same story on a weekly basis and many of these dogs lose their life because there is no one available to take them in.

“Rufus almost had the same ending as he was booked in for euthanasia before we offered him a safe space with us.”

Rufus needs a quiet home as he has only ever lived with one person and wouldn’t be comfortable in a bustling family household.

“We could look at rehoming him with older, sensible children 14+ based on the right match,” the statement adds.

“No dogs – although Rufus is none reactive on lead walks, he prefers not to be in the company of other dogs. No cats.”

Rufus, who is available for adoption for £50, has received all his vaccinations and will be neutered prior to rehoming.

Responding to his rehoming post on Facebook, one user commented: “I didn’t realise they still euthanise dogs.”

Another user replied: “I would offer him a home in a heartbeat if it would be considered to live with other dogs. I’m also a behaviourist.”

A third user suggested: “Could you maybe contact the Corgi’s breeders they could help or Corgi breed rescue often have waiting lists for people wanting an older dog.”
