The forward played under Sergej Jakirovic at Rijeka earlier in his career
Striker Matija Frigan hasn’t ruled out a move to Hull City before the transfer window closes on September 1, having been tracked by the Tigers all summer.
The Westerlo frontman has spoken for the first time about the Tigers’ interest in the Croatian star. The development comes after Sergej Jakirovic confirmed to Hull Live in Turkey his intention to bring his former player to the MKM Stadium.
City have so far been thwarted in their attempts to sign Frigan and Oli McBurnie because of the transfer restrictions imposed on them by the EFL.
A loan switch to East Yorkshire for Frigan had been mooted before a big-money switch to Spanish side Elche had been rumoured in recent days.
Sheffield United and Ipswich Town are both pushing to sign McBurnie despite City making a lucrative contract offer to the 29-year-old Scotland international. Because of the ongoing financial situation, they’d almost given up hope of signing Frigan.
Frigan, however, says a move to England could yet happen, with City set to find out the outcome of their appeal against a three-window fee restriction ban next week.
“I prefer playing at the highest possible level, but a move to Hull is definitely an option. It almost happened already, but at the moment that club has a transfer ban,” he told Gazet van Antwerpen.
“Still, Jakirović’s presence at the club plays a big role for me. Under his leadership in Rijeka, I was the best version of myself. If the transfer ban is lifted? We’ll see what happens then. Right now, I’m fully focused on Westerlo.”
Even if a move to City doesn’t happen, then Frigan says he could stay with Westerlo: “The transfer window is open for another month, and a lot can happen in that time,” he added. “I’m in regular contact with my agent. If an interesting offer comes in, why wouldn’t I leave? If I end up staying at Westerlo, I’m convinced I can continue to develop here too.”
