A historic riverside pub which brought together Gogglebox fan favourites Jenny and Lee is up for sale for a six-figure price tag.
The Crown Inn in the village of Paull was once a bustling pub, and the 19th Century tavern was also where the Channel 4 TV show’s Jenny Newby and Lee Riley first met more than 20 years ago, when Jenny was the landlady and Lee was a punter. The pub has, however, sat empty ever since before the pandemic, and it was at the centre of a demolition row.
In 2021, developers launched a bid to gain permission to convert the derelict boozer into new housing – a scheme which drew strong criticism from the Hull and East Yorkshire Campaign for Real Ale. Councillors eventually approved plans to demolish part of the Crown Inn to make way for a terrace of new homes, rubber stamping developers’ plans in October 2022.
The original Grade-II listed pub building, which dates to 1856, was set to be retained and its features restored, while later extensions will be demolished. Those plans, however, have so far failed to come to fruition and the site is now up for sale for £350,000, and being marketed by estate agents as a grand “investment opportunity”.
The old pub and the parcel of land is up for grabs together with the granted planning permissions. It means new developers or even a new pub landlord or hospitality business could take it forward.
Marketing materials from Our House Estate Agents say: “This unique circa 0.7 acre development provides a buyer with an opportunity to convert a large former public house into three modern homes with commercial units below and also construct six new dwellings, along with garages and additional flexible ground floor space.
“The site which benefits from views overlooking the Humber Estuary has full planning permission granted. Alternatively the property could be reopened as a public house, re-purposed as a cafe, restaurant, convenience store etc with accommodation above and the outside space used for camping, glamping, lodges, garden centre etc subject to the necessary planning.
“The former public house is circa 425 sqm, with planning permission granted to retain the majority of the ground floor as commercial area and stores with three one-bedroomed, affordable homes to the first floor. The property sits on a circa 0.7 acre site with private access. The former public house is connected to mains gas, electric, water and sewerage. There is a tarmacked car park and grassed areas.
“Further to the development of the former public house, planning permission has been granted on the site for six, three bedroomed, three storey properties, five of which boast garages with the sixth having a store. All will have uninterrupted views over the Estuary, ensuites to master bedrooms and balconies to enjoy the view.”
