A motorist was clocked driving at a whopping 149mph on the M62. The driver – snared on motorway in East Yorkshire last October – is among five of the worst speeding offenders caught on the Humber region’s roads in the last year, all of whom were clocked travelling well over the speed limit.

Another was caught speeding at 143mph on the M62 in February, while the others were speeding at 139mph on the A15 in March, 133mph on the A1079 last July and 132mph on the A180, in northern Lincolnshire, last May. In all, 15,988 Fixed Penalty Notices (FPNs) were handed out in the Humberside force area for speeding between March 2024 and this March, according to the data gathered by personal injury solicitors Legal Expert.

A Freedom of Information (FOI) request also revealed the specific stretches around the region which were worst for speeding offences, uncovering a top 20 list of roads. Speeding drivers can get at least three points added to their licence and reaching 12 points within three years will typically disqualify them from driving.

Top of the list is the M62 between the East Riding of Yorkshire county boundary and Junction 35 near Goole, where 3,537 speeding offences were committed. The figure means that, on average, close to ten speeding offences were committed on that stretch every day.

That’s followed by the A63 Eastbound in Hull where 2,488 offences were clocked, Hull’s A165 Holderness Road at its junction with the A1033 which saw 2,223 offences, and the M62 stretch between junctions 37 and 38 near Howden. The top five worst places for speeding in the Hull area is rounded off by the A63, which saw 1,216 offences.

The minimum fixed penalty for speeding is £100, which means that at least a staggering £1.598m worth of potential penalties were accrued up across East Yorkshire and northern Lincolnshire in 2024/25. The FOI’s list of the top 20 worst roads for speeding offences shows that motorways and A roads figure prominently. But more than 500 people were also found to have broken the 30mph speed limit on Ferriby Road in Hessle.

A spokesperson for Humberside Police said: “We remain committed to working closely with local councils and Safer Roads Humber to ensure that our roads are safe for all that use them. We continue to have officers on the streets across the force area offering safety advice to all motorists.

“We would always encourage people to raise their concerns about speeding to their local council who work in partnership with Humberside Police and Safer Roads Humber to ensure the roads in our area are as safe as possible for all road users and residents.”
