Police were called by a passerby who told them two people were on rocks below Whitby Abbey
Police have launched an investigation after the bodies of two people were discovered near a North Yorkshire landmark. The bodies of the man and woman were found below the cliff at Whitby Abbey.
They were recovered by emergency services on Wednesday evening after a member of the public called police at 7.16pm telling them they had seen a man and woman on the rocks. With the tide coming in fast, the Coastguard coordinated a helicopter recovery to ambulance crews near Whitby Abbey.
This was completed at 8.24pm. Paramedics confirmed the deaths, and the bodies have been taken to hospital by ambulance.
Police are currently working on tracing the next of kin of the man and the woman. The investigation is continuing into the circumstances of the sudden deaths for a coroner’s report.
