The £4m signing is back and a firm fixture in the Tigers’ setup
Hull City head coach Sergej Jakirovic says Ryan Giles needs a manager to believe in him if they’re to get the best out of the former Wolverhampton Wanderers defender.
Giles has endured a difficult spell at City since making his loan move permanent last summer. After falling out-of-favour under Ruben Selles, he was eventually loaned to Middlesbrough in January.
That long-mooted move back to Boro failed to live up to expectations, and now, the 25-year-old is back at the MKM Stadium and has a chance to make the left-back slot his own.
Giles is still getting back to full fitness after an ankle injury which saw him have his first session of the summer out in Turkey earlier this month, but has shown glimpses of the quality that saw the Tigers pay Luton Town £4m 12 months ago.
His run and cross at Stockport County fashioned a chance for Abu Kamara in the first half, before his ball in from wide on the left presented Mason Burstow with the chance to head in the winner. He also shone again on Tuesday evening against Sunderland.
Jakirovic says he believes in the Telford-born ace and feels that if he can get the best out of him this season, then the Tigers have a real asset on their hands.
“I’m convinced (he can be a big player) of that because I already spoke with him. I think the problem is nobody believed in him one hundred percent,” Jakirovic told Hull Live when asked about the potential for Giles to be a top player in the Tigers’ ranks.
“You cannot believe in a player for one or two games and then if he’s not good, you can go somewhere else. Somebody invested in him, somebody paid very good money for him, so we need to help him to support him.
“He must give one hundred percent in every training session and in every game, but he’s obviously a very fast player. He can repeat (his runs) all day. Maybe he has some difficulties in the defence, but you can train (improve in training) this. We are here to help him.
“He’s a very fast player, he’s got a very good shot and can cross the ball very well, and I think it’s a very big advantage for us,” the Bosnian added.
