Hull City have confirmed the permanent departure of Alfie Jones, who has sealed a move to Middlesbrough after both clubs agreed a deal.

Hull Live reported earlier this month that Jones was the subject of strong interest from the Teesside outfit, and that interest has turned into a deal which could be worth around £3m to the Tigers, with Jones signing a four-year contract at the Riverside Stadium.

Jones said his goodbyes after the Tigers returned from Turkey on Sunday evening, having not been involved in the 1-0 win over Kasimpasa on Saturday night. His exit comes shortly after long-serving teammate Sean McLoughlin made a permanent move to Blackburn Rovers last week.

The popular central defender joined City from Southampton following the Tigers’ relegation from the Championship in 2020 and went on to play 191 times, scoring twice and clocking up three assists.

Of those outings in black and amber, Jones played 149 times in the Championship with his last coming off the bench on the final day of the season, as City fought to hold onto the point at Portsmouth which kept them in the Championship.

Jones, who was out of contract at the MKM Stadium next summer, becomes the first summer signing at Boro following the arrival of Rob Edwards, while City will now move to replace the 27-year-old Bristolian.

Akin Famewo will join the Tigers to bolster the club’s defensive ranks. A deal with the former Sheffield Wednesday man has been agreed which will see him arrive on a free transfer following his departure from Hillsborough.

As it stands, the 26-year-old defender is not expected to feature at Stockport County on Saturday, though he could be involved on Tuesday night when City host newly-promoted Sunderland at the MKM Stadium.
