Plans have been submitted for a new indoor sports centre at the site of the former Goals Soccer Centre off Clough Road. The application, which has been submitted to Hull City Council on behalf on the Ashcourt Group, seeks permission to change the use of a warehouse building to be used for indoor sports and recreational activities.

The site in question, near the Ferrystone Lift Bridges, used to form part of the Goals Soccer Centre before its closure in 2020. The application that is now under consideration at the council, seeks to bring the site back to life in the form of eight indoor sports courts and an outdoor padel court.

The outdoor padel court would be to the rear of the building housing the indoor courts and would be surrounded by a four metre high fence. Plans say this would be visible to the north and east of the site from Ferry Lane over the River Hull.

The application site is around 0.7 hectares in size and will contain parking provision for 56 cars and one motorcycle. The current vehicular access from the southern boundary via Innovation Drive is proposed to retained for the new development.

Plans state that it is anticipated that up to 20 jobs could be generated by the proposed development once operational. If approved the site would help facilitate padel’s growing popularity in the city.

In recent years, the tennis-like sport has skyrocketed in popularity around the world and finally made its way to Hull earlier this year. East Coast Padel, based off National Avenue, has been a popular addition to Hull’s sport scene since opening in June.

The application will now be decided upon by the council.
