Alfie Jones is closing in on sealing a move to Hull City’s Championship rivals Middlesbrough as the Tigers’ summer squad reshuffle continues.
Jones did not train with his City teammates at Riva on Friday and was not involved in the final game of their pre-season trip to Turkey against Kasimpasa on Saturday, although he had a slight injury.
It is understood the central defender is set to travel to Teesside to wrap up a move to join Rob Edwards’ Boro in a move that could net the Tigers around £3m.
Jones is out of contract next summer. Although the club do have an option, a deal with Boro has been agreed that will help City’s current financial situation with the EFL.
City snapped up Jones from Southampton following their relegation to League One in 2020 and the cultured centre-back became an instant hit in East Yorkshire.
Boss at the time, Grant McCann, famously described him as a Rolls-Royce defender, and he’s been a key figure at the MKM Stadium in the years since.
Since arriving from the South Coast, Jones has amassed 191 appearances for the Tigers, with 149 of those coming in the Championship, scoring two goals.
His imminent departure follows shortly after Sean McLoughlin, who left City’s training camp in Turkey on Thursday to return to England and seal a move to Blackburn Rovers.
City are now expected to bring in extra cover in the heart of the back four to provide competition for Semi Ajayi, Charlie Hughes and John Egan with former Sheffield Wednesday defender Akin Famewo likely to arrive on a free transfer.
