Portsmouth’s sporting director Richard Hughes admits trying to do a deal for Abu Kamara is challenging, given Hull City’s current predicament which has seen them fall foul of the EFL.
Pompey want to bring the City winger back to Fratton Park this summer, while there is firm interest from Scottish giants Rangers in the 21-year-old.
City may yet part with Kamara, who joined the club in a £4m deal on deadline day last summer. But Blues chief Richard Hughes says their current situation has complicated matters with the East Yorkshire club currently unable to bring players in.
The Tigers have been slapped with a three-window fee restriction by the EFL, meaning they cannot buy players or pay loan fees. The club have appealed, but there is no word yet on what, if any, reduction there will be and are therefore, in a state of limbo both in terms of players coming and going.
“It’s always really tough to do it, and I think you take Hull as a sort of working example – they’ve gone under an embargo, and I think the natural reaction would be they have to sell players,” he told BBC Solent.
“But, also, you can’t lose sight of the fact that they may not be able to replace them and I think that’s probably the flip side of that coin – so that becomes really difficult.
“So, he’s Hull’s player, we completely respect that, and is he a player we’d be interested in? Yes, absolutely. Is it one that we’ll be able to do? We have to wait and see and see how that pans out.
“Again, when you talk about these unknown factors, you look at Hull’s situation and, again, there’s an incredible amount of grey areas in that sort of set up to get a deal done.”
