A claim that was being spread on social media that the Mayor of Hull and East Yorkshire missed out on £300 million in Government grants as he “sacked the admin team” has been unequivocally refuted.
On Saturday, July 12, a post made on X claimed that Luke Campbell had failed “his first big real test” by missing out of a huge sum in Government grants. It claimed that this was because “he failed to complete the paperwork properly because he sacked the admin team”.
The post garnered a considerable amount of attention online, receiving more than 155,000 views and being reposted over a thousand times.
A screenshot of the post was later posted by another account which received even more attention than the initial post. This subsequent post was itself reposted by the ‘Reform Party UK Exposed’ page which has more than 55,000 followers.
After seeing the claims attracting growing interest online, Hull Live contacted the Hull and East Yorkshire Combined Authority (HEYCA) who said the post is entirely false. A HEYCA spokesperson said: “Every part of this post is a mistruth. There is no admin team. No-one has been sacked. There has been no missed deadline or ‘paperwork’ not submitted.

“There has, sadly, been no opportunity to secure ‘£300 million of Government grants’, nor any framework or funding programme that would mean HEYCA could have accessed such funding to benefit local people.
“It’s very disappointing that this untruthful information has been posted, and further shared. It is noticeable from the comments on X that many people realise it has no factual basis.
“Colleagues across the two councils and the small team within HEYCA are working hard to develop the plans and approaches that can secure more government support and funding for our region.
“We hope no further such inaccurate information will be posted again in future.”
