Disruption is expected for motorists as a major road near a market town will close for one year. Work on a new road and roundabout aimed at improving safety will begin in Pocklington in August.

A new roundabout will be built on the A1079, removing the sharp T-junction and there will also be a new wider link road, bypassing The Balk. Barratt and David Wilson Homes, which developed Wolds View and Stewarts Reach in Pocklington, is leading the infrastructure works.

The works will improve safety for the wider community following multiple road traffic collisions in recent years. The work will last up to 52 weeks in total, although they will affect different sections of the route at different times through that period.

A diversion route will be in place.

Daniel Smith, Managing Director of Barratt and David Wilson Homes Yorkshire East, said: “Our priority is to build a sustainable community at Pocklington.

“This means creating spaces that the new residents at the two developments can enjoy and also, that the wider community can benefit from.

“We fully understand that the road works will be disruptive over the coming months and we will do everything we can to minimise this. In future, the new road layout will improve the lives of everyone in Pocklington.”

While the work will require the use of a limited amount of existing undeveloped land, existing habitats will be protected and there will be wildflower grassland along the embankment, as well as Sustainable Drainage Systems, which attract wildlife and support flood management.
