Veterans’ charity Hull 4 Heroes has announced the opening of a new Community Shop in the city centre.

After an invite-only Champagne launch event on the evening of Thursday, June 26, the Hull 4 Heroes Community Shop will open its doors to the public on Friday, June 27, at 10am. Hull 4 Heroes already occupies two neighbouring units on the third floor of the Princes Quay shopping centre, for its offices and drop-in hub; the Community Shop now adds a large retail presence for the cause on the ground floor of the centre, previously occupied by JD Sports.

A post on social media shared the “exciting news” of the shop’s launch, saying: “We’re thrilled to announce the grand opening of our brand new Hull 4 Heroes Community Shop in Princes Quay. Open to all – everyone welcome!

“Come along, grab some amazing bargains, and show your support for veterans and their families in our community. Whether you’re looking for household goods, clothing, furniture, or just a friendly chat — we’ve got something for everyone.

“Every purchase helps us continue our vital work supporting those who’ve served. We can’t wait to see you there.”

Paul Matson, Hull 4 Heroes founder, said: “The shop is where you first walk in from the car park so we’re expecting good footfall. We’ve already had people knocking on the door while the shutters have been down.”

He said: “The Community Shop is something we have wanted to do for a while – we have done it in a tiny way before, in an out-of-the-way spot, but no one could really find it. This is a bit more like a charity shop; there is food in there and also furniture and clothing that is available for anyone to purchase.”

The shop will initially trade on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays, from 10am to 4pm. Paul said: “That will be to start with.

“We have the number of volunteers we need to cover those opening times but we could do with more to help us, which could mean we can increase on those days. Also, if people would like to donate furniture and clothing and other things – but please, no books – we will be happy to accept those items.”

Paul said it had taken about six months to get the shop prepared for opening. “People can pop in to the shop with donations or for bigger items of furniture they can ring us – we don’t expect people to walk in carrying a sofa.”
