Former Hull City manager Ruben Selles is being tipped for a swift return to management after being installed as the clear favourite to be the new Sheffield United manager.
Sheffield United are reportedly set to part ways with manager Chris Wilder after missing out on promotion to the Premier League. The Blades were battling for promotion to the top flight for much of the campaign last season but missed out on the top two and then were beaten 2-1 by Sunderland at Wembley Stadium in the play-off final.
The Telegraph have reported that Sheffield United have now decided to sack Wilder, it it being claimed that the Blades will announce their decision within the next 24 hours.
COH Sports – the new ownership group at Bramall Lane after completing a takeover in December last year – are reported to have made their decision with the aim of appointing their own manager ahead of next season. Wilder is reported to be “bitterly disappointed” by the decision, but it’s also been claimed that exit is “amicable” between both parties. The 57-year-old had been in charge of Sheffield United since 2023, in what was his second spell as the club’s manager.
Now it appears Selles could be the man to take over, with the bookmakers installing him as an overwhelming 1/8 odds on favourite to be the next Blades boss, suggesting the move is all but done, while growing media reports say that he is in advanced talks to take over from Wilder.
It would be a great move for Selles, who was disappointed to have been sacked by the Tigers after managing to keep the club in the Championship last season, albeit by the slimmest of margins.
