A charity shop that has been a firm fixture in the town of Hessle for half a century is marking the milestone later this month.
Hessle Epilepsy Charity Shop, in Tower Hill, will celebrate its 50th anniversary on Monday, June 23. The golden occasion calls for 50 per cent off all clothing and shoes in the shop and a glass of bubbly for customers, as well as a prize raffle.
Steve Green, shop manager, said: “Since the shop has been open with the help of volunteers it has raised hundreds of thousands of pounds to help people in East Yorkshire suffering with epilepsy. Only recently, we spent £10,000 on sleep activity monitors for caregivers and parents who need to watch for abnormal movement at night for babies/infants, children and adults.”
The ten SAMi-3 kits were given away free to anyone who would benefit from their use and had proof of an epilepsy diagnosis from their GP. Steve said: “Hopefully, in the near future, the shop will be purchasing another ten of these kits.”
All the money raised at the charity shop – it totals over £500,000 in the time it has been in existence – is used to help people in the East Yorkshire area who have epilepsy and has helped to buy equipment for Hull Royal Infirmary and Castle Hill Hospital, for example. Steve has previously praised the “amazing” team of volunteers, the oldest being 92 this month, without whom the shop could not run
The shop is at 2a Tower Hill, Hessle, HU13 0SP, and is open Monday to Saturday from 9am to 3pm. Steve said: “Donations are always welcome and can be dropped off outside during shop hours.
“Please support us as all money raised helps epilepsy sufferers.” Call the shop on 01482 648295 for more information.
