Some of the most exciting new British artists championed by BBC Introducing from across the UK will feature at this year’s Glastonbury Festival – and a young singer-songwriter from East Yorkshire will be one of them.

Fiona-Lee, who hails from Howden, said she was “really shocked” when she found out she would be appearing at the huge music festival. “I really wasn’t expecting it.”

Fiona-Lee was performing for an Introducing Away Day, at Maida Vale Studios, a few months ago, when the surprise was sprung on her by Jericho Keys, a presenter and producer for BBC Introducing locally. She said: “I thought it was a joke,” praising how much airplay and support she had received from the platform in her blossoming music career.

She released her debut EP, titled Nothing Compares To Nineteen, earlier this year and its six tracks will make up her Glastonbury set. “I’ve never been to Glastonbury before, I’m just excited at the moment.

“I am sure there will be nerves on the day, just before I go on stage, but they will be good nerves. The biggest crowd I’ve played in front of before will probably be 2,000 people, when I toured with The Amazons.

“I’ll be on on the Thursday, at 1pm – I think I’ll be opening that stage – and then I’ll be able to go around the whole of the festival. I know a few friends who are going, including my best friend from childhood.

“I’ll play the six songs from my EP – I write everything myself; these are all songs that I’ve written in my bedroom.” Fiona-Lee, who describes her music style as alternative/indie/rock with folk influences, currently lives in London but comes “back home” often to visit family and friends.

Always “very shy” about performing when she was younger, Fiona-Lee first learned to play the piano and then “ended up teaching myself the guitar in Year 9”. Joining Junction Goole ’s “Goole of Rock” band helped boost her confidence.

When she has any downtime, Fiona-Lee enjoys going to gigs and spending time in nature – “that’s very important to me” – and sitting down to a good TV series. “I like making things as well, I’m into things like lino printing.”

Coming up, Fiona-Lee said she has a new EP coming out later in 2025 and will be performing at Humber Street Sesh, on the BBC Introducing stage, her first time with a band. “I’m hoping to build a bigger fan base,” she said.

“I do have some other shows coming up but nothing’s been announced yet.”
