A grateful dad-to-be has expressed his “deepest gratitude” for the “extraordinary care” his wife recently received at Hull Women and Children’s Hospital.

Asda home delivery driver Jeevaraja got in touch with Hull Live after his 21-weeks-pregnant wife Gopika needed emergency surgery to save their baby, the couple’s first child. He said he wanted to record his “heartfelt thanks to Hull hospital staff for their exceptional care”.

Jeevaraja, of Burton Pidsea, said his wife was now recovering at home and on bed rest, with things looking hopeful for the rest of her pregnancy. “My wife was admitted in a critical condition; the doctors acted immediately and informed us that an emergency operation was necessary to save both her and our unborn baby.

“They were honest about the situation, telling us there was only a 33 per cent chance of saving our unborn baby — but they still gave it everything they had, with full effort, compassion, and care. Thanks to their dedication and swift action, both my wife and unborn baby are now doing well.

“I truly believe that the staff at Hull Women and Children’s Hospital didn’t just do their job, they saved our world. From the doctors and nurses to the support staff, everyone showed professionalism, warmth, and a level of care that went far beyond our expectations.”

Jeevaraja said he and Gopika, who suffers with “many” health issues, had been trying for a baby for about four years. They are now expecting a daughter.

“We were both very worried,” said Jeevaraja. “They told us there were no guarantees and they could only do their very best.

“In a moment where I felt helpless, they stood strong for us.” Gopika had suffered heavy bleeding earlier on in her pregnancy.

“She called me when I was at work. I told her to leave the door open and call an ambulance, but she fell.” Jeevaraja said a neighbour had come to the rescue.

He wanted to thank neighbours and villagers as well as his workplace – “everyone has been very supportive and understanding” – for their help and compassion. “I feel very comfortable and very lucky at present.”

He added: “We often hear criticism of the NHS, but it’s important to also celebrate the heroes who quietly save lives every day. I want to thank Hull hospital from the bottom of my heart; you gave my family a second chance, and we will never forget it.”
