George Hill’s impressive 5-46 for Yorkshire and three wickets in a devastating over for Hampshire speedster Sonny Baker headlined a bowling day at the start of this County Championship match at Headingley.

There was a nod to Yorkshire’s future and past today, with seam-bowling all-rounder Hill – aged 23 – coming up against Jake Lehmann, the son of White Rose batting legend Darren, who top-scored with a well-paced 76 in 251 all out.

Both impressed in what was looking like Yorkshire’s day. That was until England Test hopeful Baker tore in late in the day to trap Sam Whiteman lbw and bowl Ben Coad and James Wharton as the home side ended the day tottering at 48-4.

After Hampshire were inserted, left-handed Lehmann’s 11 fours in 93 balls looked as if it was keeping them afloat in helpful bowling conditions.

It was Lehmann’s first Hampshire fifty, having briefly represented Yorkshire as an overseas player in late 2016.

While Yorkshire made two changes from their opening round draw at Glamorgan – Jhye Richardson and wicketkeeper Harry Duke for Logan van Beek and fractured thumb victim Jonny Bairstow – Hampshire were unchanged from their innings home defeat to Essex.

The hosts made the ideal start through Australian Test quick Richardson, whose ninth ball forced Joe Weatherley to push forwards and feather behind, leaving the score at one for one.

Opener Nick Gubbins, whose University days were spent in Leeds, drove nicely to lead the fightback against some early assistance for the quicks but fell just after lunch for 43 when he was caught at third slip off Jack White.

That left Hampshire at 95-3, with Tom Prest having fallen just before the break when trapped lbw by Hill for 35. Gubbins and Prest had shared a second-wicket 75.

Visiting captain Ben Brown was also pinned lbw as he advanced at Hill’s seam amidst a bright start to the afternoon for Yorkshire at 111-4

Lehmann’s presence at number four was the beginning of Hampshire’s revival in tandem with teenager Ben Mayes, who contributed 39 to an 88-run partnership.

Lehmann, strong through the off-side off front and back foot, reached his 50 off 65 balls during their alliance.

However, Mayes and Liam Dawson departed soon afterwards – bowled by captain Dom Bess’s off-spin and caught behind off Ben Coad’s seam – to tip the balance back towards Yorkshire at 204-6.

Further success came quickly, with Hill to the fore. He struck twice in four balls in the 60th over, getting Codi Yusuf and Kyle Abbott lbw to leave the score at 222 for eight.

Left-handed Lehmann continued to stand firm as the majority of those struggled around him.

By tea, the 33-year-old had reached 70, but Coad then uprooted Eddie Jack’s off-stump before Hill’s sixth first-class five-for was completed when Lehmann holed out at deep mid-wicket to end the Hampshire innings.

But ball continued to dominate bat as South African new-ball pair Kyle Abbott and Cody Yusuf kept things very tight, the former rewarded when Fin Bean attempted to leave alone and lost his off-stump with the score on seven.

Then it was all about Baker’s burst, with the 23-year-old trapping Sam Whiteman lbw, forcing Coad to play on and then yorking Wharton to finish the day with 3-16 from five overs.

Report by ECB Reporters’ Network, supported by Rothesay.

Reform UK has hit back as a war of words between themselves and the Liberal Democrats continues in Hull. The party has responded after the Lib Dem leader, Sir Ed Davey, came out swinging for the former boxer, and Reform Mayor of Hull and East Yorkshire, Luke Campbell.

With Hull City Council‘s local elections just a few weeks away, Reform UK and the Lib Dems have entered a political row. The Lib Dems who currently run the council are looking to keep or build upon their majority of 1 whilst Reform UK hope to replicate their success in last year’s Mayoral election and secure their first councillors in the Guildhall. A full list of candidates running in the upcoming election can be viewed here.

The row kicked off after the Reform leader, Nigel Farage, stood on stage at Hull’s Connexin Live and accused the local councils of ‘obstructing’ and ‘being against’ Mr Campbell during his first year as the region’s Mayor. The leader of Hull City Council, Lib Dem Cllr Mike Ross, was less than pleased by Mr Farage’s comments and has said the Reform leader should apologies as the comments were “an insult to so many people, both councillors and officers who have dedicated considerable time into trying to make it [the Combined Authority] work for the region.”

The row between the two parties heated up when the leader of the Lib Dems, Sir Ed Davey visited Hull on April 8. In response to a Reform UK comment which claimed Mr Farage was correct to identify “political blocks to progress” within the Combined Authority, and that Mr Campbell has been “consistent” in his willingness to work cross-party since his being elected, Sir Ed told Hull Live: “Luke Campbell has been consistent. Consistently useless. Consistently missing in action. Consistently not turning up to meetings with ministers. Consistently not turning up to meetings with local people. People are pretty angry with him.”

Reform say that the Mayor has only missed a single national meeting, which was due to a family matter. A spokesperson from the party added: “Ed Davey’s comments are way off the mark and show he hasn’t got a clue what’s going on in Hull and East Yorkshire. Ed Davey doesn’t know the region, he doesn’t understand its struggles, and he hasn’t been part of the work to get things moving here like Luke Campbell does.

McBurnie remains City’s top goalscorer this season, having bagged 14 goals in all competitions, including one in the EFL Cup.

McBurnie continues to play a leading role for the Tigers with his presence at the top of the field being key to way Jakirovic’s side play.

Phillips, though, believes the time might be right for the striker to come out of the side for a week, with the former Sunderland man believing McBurnie could be better for a break.

“From Kyle Joseph’s point of view, he’ll be so frustrated when he’s sitting there watching the striker not score a goal,” Phillips told BestBettingSites.co.uk.

“Normally, managers go four or five games maximum if a player doesn’t score, and they tend to bring them out, give them a rest and let them watch from the side and give someone else an opportunity. He’s clearly doing something that the manager likes.

“But from the player’s point of view, it might be frustrating. The only thing is, when you haven’t scored for a while, you just try a little bit too hard, you run around, and you lose your discipline a little bit.

“So after eight games, if I were a manager, I’d probably pull him in and say, ‘look, I’m going to rest you tomorrow’. Delivered in partnership with the English Football League (EFL), Manchester City, Celtic FC and Rangers FC, over 39,000 free spots are on offer, giving families across the UK extra support during the busiest and most expensive weeks of the school break.

Half of parents say they are stressed at the thought of balancing work and childcare during the summer break, with many struggling to keep children entertained and some parents admitting to resorting to taking sick leave due to limited childcare options.

The research also shows children say “I’m bored” an average of 14 times a week during the summer break, adding to the pressure on parents to constantly find ways to keep them engaged and active. Kellogg’s Football Camps offer a solution, giving children the chance to make friends, step away from screens and learn new skills in sessions led by FA-qualified coaches, while providing extra support for hard-pressed parents.

The camps will return from June 27 for girls and boys aged five to 15. They will take place at 73 clubs across the UK, including at Hull City and at Grimsby Town.

Hull FC will train this Saturday morning, Hull Live has been told, with John Cartwright leading the session as normal ahead of Thursday’s Super League game against St Helens.

The Black and Whites confirmed on Tuesday morning that Cartwright will depart the club at the end of the 2026 season. The club are expected to appoint Steve McNamara as his replacement for the 2027 season and beyond, with the Hull-born coach currently working under Sam Burgess at Warrington Wolves.

Meanwhile, Cartwright will lead Hull’s preparations for Thursday’s game against the Saints, with training resuming on Saturday before stepping up once again next week. The Australian will also take his pre-match press duties as normal.

Navigating a tough few days, Hull, as Cartwright stated post-match after Good Friday’s derby defeat at Hull KR, have prioritised recovery this week after an injury toll that has reached double figures, with the likes of John Asiata and Arthur Romano now out for substantial periods.

Some light sessions were planned, with one of those sessions taking place on Thursday, with the players off on Wednesday. They also had a light session scheduled for Tuesday, but after Cartwright addressed the players of his end-of-season departure, it was deemed, by both the coaching staff and senior players, not viable to follow through with that session.

However, Hull will train as normal from Saturday in the lead up to Thursday’s game. They currently sit ninth in Super League after seven rounds, with three wins to their name and four defeats, and are out of the Challenge Cup.

A club statement from CEO Richie Myler read on Tuesday: “John will continue to lead the first-team squad for the remainder of the current campaign, and has the support of the full club as we work together to finish the season as strongly as possible.

“To minimise speculation, the club can confirm that they are in the process of securing the services of a new head coach for the 2027 season onwards, and will provide a further update shortly.”
