A pop-up café serving homemade Indian food from Punjab is returning after a successful first event, offering an exciting new way of eating out in Hull. Its founder hopes to bring “the taste of Apna Punjab to our lovely city”.

Little Punjab, founded by Victoria Singh, opened its doors at Oasis Hub in 310 Newland Avenue in July. With the food proving to be a huge hit, it returns to the same location on Saturday, August 16 from 11am to 6pm.

Explaining her reasons for opening the new café, Victoria said: “I’m Indian myself and I love my culture. I love the colours, I love the traditions, I love everything about it.

“I just wanted to do something a little different. Something different from a takeaway, something different from a restaurant, and I thought, because I am working, I could do it once a month as a pop-up café.”

Little Punjab serves authentic homemade food such as Panjabi breakfast with parontha (fried flat bread) with yoghurt and pickles, chana aloo with roti, and chicken tikka sizzlers. Doing a pop-up once a month meant she could focus on quality, Victoria said.

The first Little Punjab event went “really well” and had promising feedback. “It was really lovely, everybody enjoyed themselves and we had lots of comments,” Victoria said.

She added: “I just thought it was a really good idea to do a pop-up with limited edition kind of food. You can’t get it all the time, you don’t see it everywhere, it comes and it is very vibrant, colourful, and beautiful.”

Victoria learned to cook at home with her family. “My mum and dad had restaurants and takeaways and we’ve always been brought up to cook Indian food from scratch,” she said.

“I have always done it for my friends and my family and they were like, ‘Why don’t you open a restaurant?’ But it’s not something that I want to do every day.”

Victoria’s children, Stanley and Shaan Singh, also have an entrepreneurial spirit and previously made a podcast together during lockdown called ‘Reading With Stanley‘. Stanley, who was in primary school at the time, reviewed books and his older sister took care of production and editing.

Little Punjab has social media where future pop-up dates will be announced and can be followed on Instagram. It also has a Little Punjab Facebook page.
