Here’s a run down of some of the planning applications that have recently been approved by East Riding Council which include changes to part of the former M&S store in Bridlington. The approved applications also include solar canopies in Pocklington.
Changes at 4-7 Prince Street, Bridlington
East Riding Council has approved plans to changes to a number of properties on Prince Street in Bridlington. The application pertains to numbers 4, 5, 6, and 7 Princes Street. Number 7, which formed part of the town’s Marks and Spencer store, has been vacant since 2018. The approved planning application includes turning the upper floors of numbers 6 and 7 into a thirteen room hotel which would be accessed from an existing door on Prince Street.
Despite the four properties all having completely distinct exteriors, they are all under the same ownership. In addition to the hotel, the application will look to upgrade the signage on the properties to give the street front a more traditional look. Documents submitted to the council said the current shop fronts “are not in-keeping with the traditional style of their individual buildings or the wider Conservation Area.”
Solar canopies

Plans have also been approved for the erection of two solar canopies within the car park of the East Riding Leisure Francis Scaife centre in Pocklington. Plans say that one of the canopies will cover six parking bays whilst the other will cover four. It is said in the planning application that “utilising renewable energy generation through installation of solar carports is a strategy for the long term. By generating renewable electricity, the East Riding of Yorkshire Council can significantly contribute towards the shift for clean growth and decarbonisation.”
Horse stables and riding arena
Finally, the council has also approved plans for horse stables and a ‘riding arena’ off Birker Lane in Wilberfoss. Approved plans say the stables will come in the form of an ‘American style barn’ with timber Shiplap cladding. Plans add that there will be a large skylight in the stable’s roof to reduce the need for lighting.
It is also said the shelter is to allow “the home owners at Swallows Barn to provide sheltered and secure accommodation for their horses.” The riding arena will be 20m by 40m in area which is to be surrounded by timber fencing.
