Former Hull KR forward Luis Johnson has returned to the professional game after 11 months on the sidelines through injury, joining Championship side Doncaster with immediate effect.

The versatile back-rower, who can cover multiple positions, last featured at senior level for Castleford Tigers in August 2024. Shortly after, he suffered a season-ending ACL injury during a reserves match and has been in recovery since.

Now 26, Johnson made 33 appearances for Hull KR, initially joining on loan in 2019 before making a permanent switch in 2021 as part of a swap deal involving Robbie Mulhern and Warrington Wolves. He departed Hull KR at the end of the 2023 season when his contract expired and later signed with Castleford, where he sustained his long-term injury.

Doncaster have announced his arrival for the rest of the Championship campaign, with the South Yorkshire side currently outside the play-offs in eighth position.

He links up with the likes of former Rovers players Connor Robinson and Craig Hall at the Eco-Power Stadium.

“I’ve been keeping up with my rehab with Castleford since I left last year, but I’m looking to start playing soon, and Doncaster is the perfect fit for me, so I’m looking forward to it,” Johnson said.

“It’s been very welcoming. I spoke to the coach, and he’s on board with what I want to do, and I’m on board with what he wants to do as well.

“Hopefully I can get a few games and experience what it’s like to be here. I’m just really keen to play with the boys because it’s been a year, so I’m just very keen.

“I’m definitely looking forward to getting out there.”
